I am thinking if by losing elegance we are also dropping something else. Anything I’d identify as a further perception of what is great and simple in life.

Scruton suggests that living without that greater perception is much like surviving in a religious desert. He argues that the artists of the past were aware that living was saturated in chaos and suffering. But they had a remedy for this and the therapy was beauty. He reckons that the lovely thing of beauty provides consolation in sorrow and affirmation in joy. It shows human life to be worth-while.

Elegance – A memory of transcendent truth
Splendor is in the eye of the beholder. But is elegance just a subjective thing? Can there be also an objective truth to it?

Possibly we need to re-visit the knowledge of the ancients. In accordance with Plato; beauty; like justice; and goodness; can be an eternally existing entity.
