Defining elegance

Possibly that is due to individual variations within our understanding of it. Splendor is in a person’s eye of the beholder. What one person finds wonderful; yet another merely sentimental. One; attractive; another repulsive.

Beauty has been reported to be anything related to appreciating equilibrium; balance; rhythm. It captures our interest; gratifying and increasing the mind.

It is not the items portrayed by artwork that describes whether anything is lovely or ugly. As an alternative it is how the object is dealt with that makes it probably inspirational.

Religious philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg implies that what arouses our feeling that the human experience is wonderful is not the face area it self; nevertheless the devotion shining from it. It is the spiritual within the normal that stirs our affections; not the normal on their own.

Creative art
Roger Scruton; philosopher; points out that between 1750 and 1930 the aim of artwork or audio was beauty. People saw splendor as useful as truth and goodness. Then in the 20th century it stopped being important. Then several artists directed to bother; distress and to separate moral taboos. Awakening to the spiritual

Effect on us of cultural change
I’m wondering if by dropping splendor we’re also dropping anything else. Anything I would describe as a further understanding of what’s good and simple in life.

Scruton suggests that residing without this deeper belief is like surviving in a spiritual desert. He argues that the musicians of days gone by were conscious that life was packed with turmoil and suffering. But they’d a remedy for this and the remedy was beauty. He reckons that the beautiful masterpiece of design delivers consolation in sorrow and affirmation in joy. It reveals human life to be worth-while.

Splendor – A memory of transcendent truth
Splendor is in the eye of the beholder. But is elegance just a subjective thing? Is there also an goal reality to it?

Probably we have to re-visit the wisdom of the ancients. In accordance with Plato; elegance; like justice; and goodness; is an eternally active entity. He said it forever exists; aside from changing social conceptions and circumstances. This will signify elegance has existed even though there was no one around to detect it.
