The spirit of our times appears to no longer price beauty.

King Charles was speaking with the Noble Institute of British Architects at the occasion of their 150th anniversary concerning the proposed expansion of the National Gallery.

Is this still true? And do we must re-discover splendor about us?

Defining elegance
Whenever we see something lovely their splendor is subjectively felt. Yet; the concept of elegance and ugliness is challenging and difficult to put into phrases and define. Possibly this is due to individual variations in our understanding of it. Splendor is in a person’s eye of the beholder. What one individual sees lovely; yet another simply sentimental. One; attractive; another repulsive.

Elegance has been reported to be anything to do with appreciating equilibrium; harmony; rhythm. It conveys our interest; satisfying and raising the mind.

It’s maybe not the objects indicated by art that describes whether anything is wonderful or ugly. Instead it is how the item is managed which makes it probably inspirational.

Religious philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg implies that what arouses our feeling that the human experience is beautiful isn’t the facial skin it self; nevertheless the love shining from it. It is the religious within the normal that stirs our affections; not the normal on its own.

Creative art
Roger Scruton; philosopher; highlights that between 1750 and 1930 the aim of artwork or audio was beauty. Persons found splendor as useful as truth and goodness. Effect on people of national change
I am thinking if by losing elegance we’re also dropping anything else. Anything I’d describe as a greater perception of what is excellent and innocent in life.

Scruton shows that residing without this deeper understanding is like surviving in a religious desert. He argues that the musicians of days gone by were aware that life was filled with chaos and suffering. But they’d a solution for this and the solution was beauty. He reckons that the lovely masterpiece of design provides consolation in sorrow and affirmation in joy. It shows human life to be worth-while.

Splendor – An indication of transcendent truth
Beauty is in a person’s eye of the beholder. But is splendor just a subjective thing? Is there also an target reality to it?
